Hecate, Dark Mother
The world is a difficult place right now, so it’s not wonder Hecate has been appearing to so many witches of late. Hundreds of witches are wondering who is this magical deity, why is she reaching out to me? Well, allow me to explain.
Hecate (otherwise spelt Hekate) is the Greek goddess of witchcraft, crossroads, necromancy and boundaries. She encourages finding power within one’s self, no longer allowing others to disrespect you, and building on your witchcraft practice. To work with Hecate is to gain recognition of just how strong you are, both spiritually and otherwise, and the journey often takes witches to a place of higher power.
When working with any deity, offerings are hugely important. It’s how we show respect, and it’s what we give in return for their help. For Hecate, some useful offerings include:
Garlic
Depictions of dogs
Keys
Crossroads (eg burying spells at crossroads)
Triple moons
Moonstone, smoky quartz or labradorite
Hecate’s wheel
Torches
Purple, silver or black candles
It’s also important to know her story. In Greek mythology, Hecate was the one to help retrieve Demeter’s daughter, Persephone, from the underworld. When Persephone was taken by Hades, Hecate guided Demeter through the underworld, torch in hand, guided by her powers of night, magic and necromancy. From this, many ancient Greeks kept torches with Hecate carved into them outside the doors of their establishments. They believed this warded away evil spirits as Hecate watched over their homes.
